Beyond the Business

A journey of resilience, leadership, and purpose—shaping Nepal's tourism landscape.

Young Jyoti Adhikari

His Roots

Raised between the Ganga Jamuna hills and the city of Kathmandu, his early life was shaped by independence, resilience, and the quiet guidance of his grandfather, who instilled the values that continue to define his work today.

Following his family's legacy of public service, Jyoti initially pursued a path in politics and was elected Chairperson of his College Union, where he honed early leadership and organisational skills. During a pivotal period in Nepal's political history, he was arrested while participating in protests against the country's autocratic government, an experience that further shaped his sense of civic responsibility and resilience.

Vision to Venture

While completing his degree in Economics and English Literature at university, Jyoti co-founded Eco Trek Nepal with three friends. Entering the tourism industry with no prior experience and later continuing the venture independently as his partners branched out, he built the company through persistence and firsthand learning. What began as a modest initiative grew, through trial, error, and unwavering determination, into one of Nepal's most respected trekking companies, laying the foundation for his long-standing influence in the tourism sector.

Industry Leadership

As the team leader of Eco Trek—now Holy Himalaya Eco Trek—Jyoti pioneered the commercial pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, transforming it into one of Nepal's largest and most successful travel programs, serving thousands of pilgrims annually. His leadership extends beyond his own company into national industry governance, where he served as Chairperson of the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) and as a board member of CAAN, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal. During his tenure at TAAN, Jyoti implemented the Trekker Information Management System (TIMS), significantly enhancing trekking safety, regulation, and data management across the country. He also contributed to the identification and promotion of new trekking routes, helping to diversify Nepal's tourism offerings. At CAAN, he led the initiative to establish a dedicated domestic terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport, a critical infrastructure advancement that has since improved efficiency and accessibility for Nepal's growing aviation and tourism sectors.

Shaping Systems

As a thought leader, Jyoti Adhikari selectively assumes leadership roles across industries, only when invited or recommended by members of his community. In addition to these positions, he actively contributes to national discourse through panel discussions, conferences, and expert forums, focusing on improving governance in Nepal and advancing the standards and sustainability of the country's tourism industry. His engagement reflects a commitment to creating meaningful, long-term impact beyond his own ventures.

Building Together

Jyoti Adhikari and his wife, Asha Gurung, jointly lead the Holy Himalaya Group of Companies, guiding its diverse ventures with shared vision and expertise. Their two daughters are currently pursuing their higher education.
